Let's be honest, who hasn't been there? You've sent out five applications. Or was it eight already?
Somewhere in your inbox is an interview invitation. Another company said it would "get back to you next week." And with two applications, you cannot even remember when you sent them.
Sound familiar?
When you are actively looking for a job, things can get chaotic quickly. That is where an application tracker helps: a simple overview that lets you manage your applications in a structured way.
Why you should track your job applications
Many people underestimate how important structure is during a job search.
A few reasons why an application tracker is worthwhile:
- You will not miss any responses or deadlines.
- You can plan follow-ups intentionally.
- You can see which roles genuinely feel right for you.
- You can identify patterns, for example in rejections or interview invitations.
- You stay motivated because your progress is visible.
A clear overview is invaluable when you are managing several applications at once.
What is an application tracker?
An application tracker is usually a structured spreadsheet, for example in Google Sheets.
Typical columns include:
- Company
- Role
- Application date
- Contact person
- Status (open, interview, offer, rejected)
- Follow-up date
- Notes, such as your impressions from the interview
You can add any other columns you need. The main thing is that the system works for you.
It sounds simple, and that is precisely the point. Instead of relying on your memory, you have all the information in one place.
How to use an application tracker effectively
Here are a few practical tips:
1. Update your tracker immediately
Enter every application as soon as you send it. Not "later."
2. Use clear status fields
For example:
- Submitted
- Receipt confirmed
- First interview
- Second interview
- Offer
- Rejected
3. Set follow-up dates
If you have not received a response after 10 to 14 days, you can follow up politely.
4. Use the notes column strategically
Write down your impressions from each interview. Information about the salary range, team culture, and benefits will be extremely helpful when you make decisions later.
